a little bit tern

in 1977 I found a male Little Bittern on what is now Waters' Edge at Barton--only seen in flight it remains the only Barton record but the next year a male appeared 10 miles away at East Halton pits where it stayed for 12 days --my photos are to say the least poor and since then I have never managed to get anything on this beautiful species---thus it was with more than a little excitement that I greeted this superb male when he jumped up in front of me and Colin Richardson at the Aspro pools. amazingly he sat in full view just 30m away for what must have been 10 minutes before flying into the reedbed where views were more typical---for me possibly bird of the trip
