Common Snipe

on a wet afternoon spent an hour just watching this snipe and thinking how little I know about the identification of rarer snipe; Pintail are short-tailed from experience a long time ago!, Great are easy, Wilson's you need to see a lot of details, Swinhoe's ?? -- Snipe must vary and the tertial markings of this bird looked striking but how often do we see snipe well enough to have a good look at their tertials? anyway a nice bird

Nice shots Graham - the way the bird blends in with the foliage, it's no wonder that sharpshooters for the British Army that were able to merge with the background and fool snipe into landing and feeding were called......snipers!
