Reckon its a hoverfly of the genus Helophilus - maybe H. pendulus, although I am a birder, not a bug-man. Fantastic site which I check out quite a lot. I grew up poring over the black and white photos in my 2 volumes of Coward. I could never have imagined and still can't get used to the "out of this world" shots modern photographers like yourself manage to produce.
