new toy

having read all the reviews and asked numerous users I decided to try a 1DIII -- it arrived earlier in the week and stayed in the box for 5 days as I was too busy to get it out! I have not had chance to really get to grips with the Custom functions as yet but tried a few recommended ones today -- spent the afternoon in a public hide, too far from the waders really so often had the 2x converter on the 300 2.8; my very first impressions are sort of positive but the AF clearly does have some problems; tests so far have produced some decent results, most at 800 ISO, but there were clearly a good few soft and OOF pics amongst the results --- raptors are always a challenge -  the AF totally missed a sparring Merlin and Sparrowhawk fighting over prey as they passed the front of the hide and also failed to get the Merlin as it came back head on to the camera but I had a bit more success with this juv Peregrine which was spooking all the waders ---- I need to find some more approachable subjects to do some more tests! but there doesn't seem to be any question over IQ

Nice peregrine! Would it have been better with the IIn?
I've found a reasonable "keeper" rate with birds flying, say, left to right but birds coming at me very poor! All the forums (& Rob G) say the IIn has a better AF (for fast moving subjects) than the III so wonder what made you change? Is the IQ so much better?

a bit lighter more user friendly controls, battery a lot lighter, IQ seems a fair bit better and a change is as good as a rest -- still for the IIN though
