Ross's not Snow Goose
for several days a white Snow Goose has been reported on the local patch with Greylags; I was sceptical and suggested that was most likely to be the resident Ross's Goose first seen at Barton on September 6th 2007 and subsequently present on the upper Humber around Whitton / Blacktoft since then even visiting Hatfield Moors last winter -- finally caught up with it today and totally baffled as to why such a distinctive goose can be mis-identified at close range by so many people? The bird is a male and is mated to a female Greylag (seen mating this afternoon) the size compared to the Greylag wife is obvious here
