this 2cy gull has been frequenting Winter's Pit at East Halton for the last few weeks and has generated a bit of interest as its identification is clearly not straightforward; with some renewed interest and suggestions of Slaty-backed Gull I realised I had not made the photos widely accessible so here are my efforts on a sunny afternoon in late February -

Figure 13 of McKee et al in Birding Nov/Dec2014 on fist cycle slaty-backed gull id (available online) shows a similar bird. But the bill looks a bit thin and the outer primaries a bit dark. Gulls are so variable...
