flu shots

after 3 days in the metropolis and gaining the flu have not taken a shot for several days, only just got out of the house; so sat down and did a few random images from the past files;
while in London we went to the BBC wildlife photographer of the year exhibition ( a real rip off charging you to look at pics in a free museum!) I gained a good insight into how you win the competition; a) don't waste time taking pics in Britain 70% of the winning birds are in snow or have falling snow and we just don't get enough; b) be a well known name; c) you really have to suffer for that photo -- its not about the bird its about how much the photographer suffered to get that one shot -- in the cases above I suffered 3 days of torment, 2 days of horizontal Scottish rain, 1000 miles of driving in a cramped car and some seriously poor food to get that shot of the Ross's Gull but it encompasses the true essence of the location and the weather! Lost 5 pints of blood to the mossies while getting the Nightjar image etc etc;

that guillemot is gorgeous enough to have a great story to it. maybe include a treacherous un-secured rock climb down to a weather and wave beaten shoreline, a short but treacherous swim across a channel with a great surging current, (camera securely in dry bag but you had to swim back to get the correct lens 'cos it didn't all fit in to the dry bag). you waited wet and cold for 15 straight hours under a canvas sheet as cover, until the perfect bird emerged from the fog which lifted just long enough to give you the right light for the shot.

Great job, Graham, you worked hard and got the shot! and it was worth it. see, all you need is a good story to go with your images ;-)
