the forests of the Rockies seemed to be alive with White-winged and Red Crossbills due to a heavy spruce crop; most of the White-winged were singing and feeding in the tree tops but I came across a flock drinking at a small stream near Maligne Lake where I was able to kneel behind a tree and get these shots; at one stage a raptor flew through the trees and two crossbills exploded out towards me with one hitting the end of my lens hood with its wing!
