waders flying

in the extreme cold like we have had of late waders fly with their legs tucked up in their flank and vent feathers to maintain heat - they can then look rather strange in profile -- all of these birds were flying to high tide roosts late afternoon; the Humber was awash with ice and the foreshore frozen; how these birds survive is amazing
