Bitterns - what do they eat?
after nearly 4 weeks of ice with all of the local pits and ditches frozen solid how are Bitterns surviving? we assume they must be catching mammals and possibly small birds? but do they turn to anything that is there -- this one flew in where a flock of Woodpigeons were feeding on hawthorn berries and flew around the bushes flushing the pigs -- it then landed and walked around underneath them picking in the ice and reed edge getting fallen berries? -- I have not heard or seen a Water Rail for a week now and no Cetti's for 3 weeks -- it looks like the reedbeds will be quieter next spring
